The North Island Limousin Breeders Group Bull Trial for 2013/2014 is underway. This year 14 yearling bulls are entered in the trial which is being conducted on the property of Richard and Diana Maxwell in Matamata for the first time.
Bulls from six studs are represented with an interesting range of genetics including bulls by Mandayan Vision, Ionesco, On-Dit and Jeasonnet. Tried and tested New Zealand genetics are also in the trial including influence from Ngarimu Zire Clayton, Romn Justice and Snake Gully Y-Nest-Co. Polled bulls have been in short supply in the last few years but over half the bulls are polled in this draft..
The North Island Bull Trial has been well established for 20 years and follows strict protocols to ensure the Limousin breed qualities are demonstrated and a quality end product suitable for New Zealand conditions is represented on sale day in June. The bulls are run as one mob on a pasture feed system and besides weight gain they are judged on conformation and temperament regularly to ensure a high and consistent standard of bull is presented to buyers.
The first weigh day was held on September 18 with the heaviest bull at 480kg and the average being 416kg. Weigh days will be held monthly with the next on October 16. Please let the convenor or secretary know if you would like to attend. Contact Liz Maslin on 027 2945929 or Julie Evans on 021 992558.
